Part 1: The essence of Christmas / Christmas with a meaning

Actualizado: 19 dic 2021

For a child is born to us,

a son is given to us.

The government will rest on his shoulders.

And he will be called:

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6 NLT

The last month of the year has arrived, which means that the Christmas season is here too. As is usual, a large part of our planet comes together to commemorate Christmas, so much so that we can perceive it with the naked eye. Many families decorate their houses, and the streets are adorned with figures covered with lights alluding to this celebration. But Christmas is not only associated with something material, right? People also experience feelings. As it may be the case that some are very happy and they intend to celebrate the whole month or, instead, others feel a bit sad because they remember the departure of a loved one or another particular reason. The point is that people conceive this celebration in different ways and, consequently, live this season based on the perception they have. Nevertheless, Christmas has a unique meaning that, in reality, has always been the same since the beginning of this holiday. The essence of Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and the message that he brought to humanity.

The message of Jesus contemplates the pillars of Christmas, that is why the celebration is framed in love and gratitude. Some of the values that characterized Jesus Christ during his life on earth were solidarity, peace, hope, love, and unity. These are precisely the ones that give life to the Christmas spirit.

Solidarity

This value expresses the cooperation between people to achieve a goal for the common good. Solidarity is supporting, caring for, helping, and dignifying the lives of others. This principle is of the utmost importance to be able to overcome all the adversities that arise in life. Solidarity people are inclusive, they do not deny their hand to anyone and they always seek to collaborate to improve their environment and the lives of those around them.

Jesus says: Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets. Matthew 7:12 NLT

If you want others to treat you with love and respect, you must first act with love and respect. Christmas invites us to do that, to help the needy, to treat people with respect, and to take care of others.

Peace and hope

Living in peace with all people must be our priority. Avoiding fights, enmities, and lies is important to have a quiet life. Peace is one of the bases to reach a harmonious and stable society. On the other hand, hope is having faith that things will be better soon.

Jesus Christ himself leaves us his message of peace in our lives: I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid. John 14:27 NLT

Christmas is the perfect time to forgive, to seek peace with everyone, with God, and even with our enemies. As well as keeping our faith that the future will bring us good news.

Love and unity

In unity is strength. Family, friends, couple, work team, in each of these relationships unity must be there so that there can be growth.

Christmas is a time to meet with loved ones, with those special people who help us to move on. It is essential to do these actions with love because from love all good things come and flourish.

Finally, gifts, food, decorations, and parties are part of the celebration, of course, it is good to enjoy all this. But always keep in mind the true meaning of Christmas, and the most important thing is that we put its essence into practice at this time and hopefully every day of the year for the rest of our lives. This is what really matters. Today I encourage you to be supportive, it does not matter if you have little or a lot, and that your priority is to live in peace and love with everyone.

Take heart, fill your whole being with the Christmas spirit!🎄
